It’s the Christmas season, and it’s easy to get run down and worn out. There is plenty you can do to help yourself stay healthy and avoid many of the problems that the season brings.
The most important, and the most obvious is that you need to get as much rest as possible. Get your sleep. Although it may seem to be hard to do, sleep. If you can’t sleep your normal amount, at least try to take a nap once in a while. As little as 30 minutes can make you feel better and improve your mental focus.
Watch what you eat. It’s easy to eat too much of the wrong thing this season, as well as eating too much. If you have a lot of Christmas parties to attend, then consider eating before you go. Avoid drinking too much, and drink some water to help you stay hydrated as well as reduce the number of calories you eat because you won’t be eating as much.
Don’t forget to exercise either. Although you may not have as much time for it as you normally do, a brisk 15-minute walk around the neighborhood can do wonders for your mood and take the stress off. Throw in five minutes of weight training here and there and make sure you get all the major muscle groups. Not only will you feel better, but this will help you avoid gaining that extra weight a lot of people gain during the Christmas season.
Take time to spend with your family. Although this is a family season, you may be so rushed with parties and other events that your family gets shortchanged. Plan a nice quiet evening at home. Watch some Christmas movies, and just enjoy the evening. It’s also a great time to gather around the family dinner table and catch up with each other.
If you’re traveling during the Christmas season, especially by car, then make sure you take frequent breaks. Get out, stretch your legs, drink plenty of water. It’s really easy to get dehydrated, especially in a car or on an airplane because the air can be so dry. Eat regularly, and try to eat healthy foods.
Again, it’s a good idea to watch what you eat during the holiday season. It’s easy to eat a lot of empty calories and fill up on junk, but resist the temptation because it will only pack on holiday pounds. Then you will have to deal with starting a weight loss plan in the new year.
Enjoy a salad or some fruit. Especially with the right fruits, you can get that same sweet flavor, and it’s low in calories. Just don’t add any whipped toppings, chocolate, or anything like that. You can make it healthier with dark chocolate, but it’s still a lot of extra calories.
Take vitamins. Although the best way to get your vitamins is through food, it may be harder to get them if you’re eating all those Christmas treats. A multivitamin every day can help cover those days when you end up with a nutritional deficit.
Enjoy your holidays and make the most of them. Try to maintain some type of routine, and make sure you get your rest. You’ll have a more stress-free holiday season if you do.
